The Prostate is:

A gland that wraps around the upper part of the urethra, a tube that carries urine fron the bladder out through the tip of the penis the source of a thick fluid that both transports and nourishes sperm on its journey towards attempted procreation about the size of a walnut, weights about 20 grams located below the bladder and in front of the rectum

The prostate needs male hormones to function. The main male hormone is testesterone, which is made mainly by the testicles. Some male hormones are produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands. A combination of connective tissue, gland and muscle, the prostate provides the power that propels semen through the urethra and out the penis. Within the stroma lie smooth muscle cells that allow the gland to contract during ejaculation. The prostate plays a key role in men's sexuality, providing more than 90% of his ejaculate, including semen, the enzyme-filled liquid required for fertilization of the ovum.

The prostate can swell at times of pathology to the size of an orange and weigh 200 grams. This results in upward pressure on the bladder (causing frequent urination) and pressure on the colon (causing constipation). Because of the intimate relation in position of the urethra and the prostate, it may and frequently does cause painful urination, incomplete evacuation of the bladder, and incontinence, all by exerting pressure and stretching the sphincters that control these functions. The swollen prostate can also cause painful ejaculation and at times impotence.
